All levels of criminals want to believe that they are more intelligent than those who are looking into them, and modern technology can provide a false sense of safety from legal action. Any criminal’s demise might be attributed to their reliance on technology and personal cunning.

The fact that criminals nearly always leave a trail of evidence is excellent news for society as a whole. This is especially true for people who don’t know how cyber trails operate. When kids hide behind technology, it’s usually because they believe no one can see them, so they cover their eyes with their hands.

Politicians sometimes have the mentality of toddlers, and things may get ugly when criminal intent is mixed with political power struggles. When the former mayor of College Park, Maryland, was detained in March on suspicion of possessing child pornography, horrific crimes against children came to light recently.

Well-known LGBTQ activist Patrick Wojahn, who is friends with important figures in the Joe Biden administration, was sentenced to 30 years in jail on Monday. As part of an agreement with prosecutors, Wojahn entered a guilty plea to 140 counts pertaining to child pornography, according to Fox News. With the exception of 30 years, he received a sentence of 150 years in total. According to state law, the Democratic mayor who resigned in March will be eligible for parole in 7.5 years.

Wojahn, 47, was found guilty after detectives connected his official email address to a website that shared pornographic photos. Authorities reportedly alleged that in January, the 48-year-old posted and shared dozens of images and videos on social media apps that showed explicit child sex assault, including the rape of prepubescent boys by adults, according to Fox News.

Investigators discovered that Wojahn had a social media account with the screen name skippy_md. Fox News reports that they set up Wojahn’s College Park government email address as the Kik account’s recovery email. Authorities claim that Wojahn’s home IP address and phone number were connected to the account. They claimed that when the former mayor accessed the account, he concealed his location by using a virtual private network.

There were several serious charges against Wojahn. In August, he entered a guilty plea to 60 charges of child pornography distribution, 40 counts of child pornography possession, and 40 counts of child pornography possession with the intent to distribute.

His acts had a cascading effect on a field of victims. 52 juvenile victims some of whom are now adults who appeared in the hundreds of images and films that Wojahn owned and distributed have been identified by law authorities. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Justice Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force Program worked together with the investigators.

According to Fox News, victim impact statements read aloud in court described how victims battled severe anxiety, paranoia, restless nights, problems with trust, and a sense of security. After being revealed as victims of online child exploitation, some victims claimed that they were compelled to relocate their homes and children and that they were stalked as adults.

According to Breitbart, Wojahn was serving in his second term as mayor of College Park, having been elected in 2015. He was a city councilman for eight years prior. According to Breitbart, Wojahn, a Wisconsin native who graduated from Georgetown University Law Center, has experience in government relations and legal advocacy.

Wojahn, who joined his now-husband in a 2006 lawsuit against the state of Maryland to establish same-sex marriage as a legal right. According to Breitbart, he is also a former frequent visitor to the White House and a mentee of Pete Buttigieg, the Secretary of Transportation nominated by Joe Biden.
